Recently, I asked SquadBuilders Recruiting Manager David Graham to share his thoughts on our company's book club. It's a really cool part of our company culture, and David was kind enough to discuss it! Here's what he had to say:
"The book club was really born of the fact that Ryan (Vaughan) is a ferocious reader, juggling multiple books at a time. He resorts to a key saying that rings true - 'Leaders are Readers.' We want our team to be leaders in what we do and in their daily working lives. Reading a book that will teach us something and allow us to grow together as professionals was a natural idea."
He went on to explain how the team meets weekly at 7:15 a.m. to enjoy coffee and occasionally breakfast together as the current chapter is discussed while relating the content to what SquadBuilders is doing as a firm. "We meet in the SquadBuilders' conference room with our giant wall-to-wall canvas of Kansas City. The conference room has its own way of inspiring us and fosters growth-oriented and creative conversations. (Not to mention all the coffee!)"
"Ryan typically chooses the books if there are no suggestions," David said. "Each time we elect to read a new book as a group we poll the team for suggestions to keep the variety. The topics are largely related to business. But if we feel like a fiction book can teach us all to grow as professionals and sharpen each other, you can bet we'd dive in!"
David explained how everyone has a copy of the book we happen to be reading together at the time. If you can't make the book club discussions, we encourage team members to keep up with the reading and follow along with the notes the chosen discussion leader of the week sends.
So, there you have it! Our book club is one of the things that makes us unique and helps us to remember that we are a team. And- at the end of the day, we all just really like each other! #JoinTheSquad
